This reaction may start soon after you first take the medicine, or it might start later.

      Drug Interactions

Medicines that prevent blood clotting (e.g. heparin) , Probenecid (medicine for the treatment of joint disease and gout) , diuretics, e.g. furosemide .

      Indication

This medicine contains the active substance cefazolin, which is an antibiotic. Cefazolin is used to treat bacterial infections caused by cefazolin-susceptible bacteria, e.g:• Infections of skin and soft tissue• Infections of bones and jointsCefazolin can also be used before, during and after surgery to prevent possible infections.

      When not to Use

Cefazolin is contraindicated in patients who have a history of immediate hypersensitivity reactions (e.g., anaphylaxis, serious skin reactions) to cefazolin or the cephalosporin antibacterial drugs, penicillins, or other beta-lactams.

      Kefzol Injection Precautions

      Precaution

Serious and occasionally fatal hypersensitivity (anaphylactic) reactions have been reported in patients receiving beta-lactam antibacterial drugs. Before therapy with Cefazolin injection is instituted, careful inquiry should be made to determine whether the patient has had previous immediate hypersensitivity reactions to cefazolin, cephalosporins, penicillins, or carbapenems.

      Kefzol Injection Warnings

      Warning 1

Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD) has been reported with use of nearly all antibacterial agents, including cefazolin, and may range in severity from mild diarrhea to fatal colitis. Treatment with antibacterial agents alters the normal flora of the colon leading to overgrowth of C. difficile. If CDAD is suspected or confirmed, ongoing antibacterial drug use not directed against C. difficile may need to be discontinued. Appropriate fluid and electrolyte management, protein supplementation, antibacterial drug treatment of C. difficile, and surgical evaluation should be instituted as clinically indicated.

      Warning 2

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using Cefazolin if you suffer from disorders of blood clotting (e.g. haemophilia) or your present condition can lead to such defects (parenteral feeding, malnutrition, liver or kidney diseases, reduction in blood platelets which increases risk of bleeding or bruising [thrombocytopenia], administration of medicines that prevent blood clotting [anticoagulants like heparin]).Hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylaxis, have been reported with administration of dextrose-containing products. These reactions have been reported in patients receiving high concentrations of dextrose (i.e. 50% dextrose). The reactions have also been reported when corn-derived dextrose solutions were administered to patients with or without a history of hypersensitivity to corn products.

      Warning 3

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using Cefazolin if you suffer from severe persistent diarrhoea during or after treatment with Cefazolin. In this case contact your doctor immediately.
