      Enalapril Maleate + Hydrochlorothiazide

      Used For

      How it works

Enalapril maleate : Enalapril, after hydrolysis to enalaprilat, inhibits angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE). The mechanism through which enalapril lowers blood pressure is believed to be primarily suppression of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. ACE is a peptidyl dipeptidase that catalyzes the conversion of angiotensin I to the vasoconstrictor substance, angiotensin II. Angiotensin II also stimulates aldosterone secretion by the adrenal cortex. Inhibition of ACE results in decreased plasma angiotensin II, which leads to decreased vasopressor activity and to decreased aldosterone secretion. In patients treated with enalapril maleate plus a thiazide diuretic, there was essentially no change in serum potassium. Hydrochlorothiazide : Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic. It affects the distal renal tubular mechanism of electrolyte reabsorption. Hydrochlorothiazide increases excretion of sodium and chloride in approximately equivalent amounts. Natriuresis may be accompanied by some loss of potassium and bicarbonate.

      Co-Renitec Tablets Precautions

If hypotension occurs, the patient should be placed in a supine position and if necessary, should receive an intravenous infusion of normal saline. A transient hypotensive response is not a contra-indication to further doses, which can usually be given without difficulty once the blood pressure has increased after volume expansion.

      Warning 1

If you have a kidney problem (including kidney transplantation). These may lead to higher levels of potassium in your blood which can be serious. Your doctor may need to adjust your dose of Enalapril or monitor your blood level of potassium.

      Warning 2

If you have low blood pressure (you may notice this as faintness or dizziness, especially when standing) .

      Warning 3

If you have diabetes and are taking antidiabetic agents or insulin to control your diabetes; you should closely monitor your blood for low blood glucose levels especially during the first month of treatment. The level of potassium in your blood can also be higher.
