How it works
The mechanism of action, like all general anesthetics, is poorly understood. However, propofol is thought to produce its sedative/anesthetic effects by the positive modulation of the inhibitory function of the neurotransmitter GABA through the ligand-gated GABA receptors.

Indication
It is used as an IV general anesthetic and sedation drug .
When not to Use
It is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to propofol ; it is contraindicated in patients with allergies to eggs, egg products, soybeans or soy products .

Precaution
For general anaesthesia or sedation for surgical/diagnostic procedures, it should be administered only by persons trained in the administration of general anaesthesia and not involved in the conduct of surgical/diagnostic procedures.
Propofol 20Ml Warnings
Warning 1
Sedated patients should be continuously monitored, and facilities for maintenance of a patent airway, providing artificial ventilation, administering supplemental oxygen, and instituting cardiovascular resuscitation must be immediately available.
Warning 2
A lower induction dose and a slower maintenance rate of administration should be used in elderly, debilitated, or ASA-PS III or IV patients .
Warning 3
As with other general anaesthetics, the administration of Propofol without airway care may result in fatal respiratory complications.
