How it works
Amoxicillin is a semi-synthetic aminopenicillin of the beta-lactam group of antibiotics. It has a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity against many Gram-positive and Gram-negative micro-organisms, acting through the inhibition of biosynthesis of cell wall mucopeptide.

Indication
Amoxicillin is used to treat infections caused by bacteria in different parts of the body.
Side Effects
Hyperkinesia, dizziness and convulsions , Diarrhoea and nausea , Vomiting , Hepatitis and cholestatic jaundice , Skin rash , Skin reactions such as erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, bullous and exfoliative dermatitis, acute generalised exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP), and drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS).
When not to Use
Do not take Amoxicillin:- If you are allergic to amoxicillin, penicillin or any of the other ingredients of this medicine .- If you have ever had an allergic reaction to any antibiotic. This can include a skin rash or swelling of the face or throat.
Dosage
ORAL- Standard adult dosage: 250 mg 3 times daily, increasing to 500 mg 3 times daily for more severe infections. Standard children's dosage: 125 mg 3 times daily, increasing to 250 mg 3 times daily for more severe infections. Amoxicillin Paediatric Suspension is recommended for children under 6 months of age.

Precautions
Before initiating therapy with Amoxicillin, careful enquiry should be made concerning previous hypersensitivity reactions to penicillins or cephalosporins.
Warning 1
Amoxicillin can have side effects and the symptoms (such as allergic reactions, dizziness and convulsions) may make you unfit to drive. Do not drive or operate machinery unless you are feeling well.
Warning 2
Serious and occasionally fatal hypersensitivity reactions (including anaphylactoid and severe cutaneous adverse reactions) have been reported in patients on penicillin therapy. These reactions are more likely to occur in individuals with a history of hypersensitivity to beta lactam antibiotics.
Warning 3
Prolonged use may also occasionally result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms.
