    How it works

    Mefenamic acid belongs to a group of medicines called Non-Steroidal AntiInflammatory Drugs (or NSAIDs). Mefenamic acid binds the prostaglandin synthetase receptors COX-1 and COX-2, inhibiting the action of prostaglandin synthetase.These medicines work by relieving pain and inflammation.

    Side Effects

    GI intolerance , oedema , hypertension , skin rash, ( discontinue if occur ) . Renal impairement , allergic glomerulonephritis. Blood dyscrasias ( rare ). Raised liver enzymes.

    Drug Interactions

    Aspirin , warfarin or similar medicines including Eliquis, Xarelto or Pradaxa that are used to stop blood clots , some medicines used to treat high blood pressure , corticosteroids , lithium , cyclosporin or tacrolimus , selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, methotrexate.

    Indication

    It is used to relieve the symptoms of period pain and treat heavy periods. It also provides short term relief of pain in conditions such as: • Muscle and joint injuries such as sprains, strains and tendonitis • Dental pain.

    When not to Use

    Do not take Mefenamic Acid if You have an allergy to: • Mefenamic acid or any of the ingredients in the list • aspirin • any other NSAID medicine including COX-2 inhibitors.

    PRECAUTIONS

    Precaution

    Precaution should be taken in patients suffering from dehydration and renal disease, particularly the elderly.

    WARNINGS

    Warning 1

    It may affect your developing baby if you take it during pregnancy. Pregnant woman taking mefenamic acid should be closely monitored by their doctor.

    Warning 2

    Patients on prolonged therapy should be kept under regular surveillance with particular attention to liver dysfunction, rash, blood dyscrasias or development of diarrhoea.

    Warning 3

    Prolonged use of any type of painkiller for headaches can make them worse. If this situation is experienced or suspected, medical advice should be obtained and treatment should be discontinued.
