How it works

Sodium picosulfate is chemically bisodic salt of 4-4'(2-Picoliliden) - bis (-Phenylsulphuric acid). It acts as a local laxative, metabolized by the colonic bacteria to the active compound bis (P-hydroxyphenyl) pyridyl-2-methane, which stimulate the mucosa of the large intestine & causing colonic peristalsis. Sodium picosulfate is usually effective within 10–14 hours .

Indication

Sodium picosulfate treats constipation by enhancing bowel movement, it is indicated in: · Acute and chronic constipation • Relief of evacuation in painful conditions such as hemorrhoids • Pre and post operatively • Preparation of barium enema • Preparation of colon for proctosigmoidoscopy .

Side Effects

Following side effects related to the gastrointestinal tract may rarely be seen with sodium picosulfate use: abdominal pain, abdominal discomfort or distension, borborygmus, nausea, vomiting and diarhoea .

When not to Use

It is contraindicated in patients with ileum, intestinal obstruction, acute abdominal conditions like appendicitis, acute inflammatory bowel disease and in severe dehydration. Known hypersensitivity to sodium picosulfate .

Dosage

Adults: 1-2 tablets or 10-15 drops once a day , Children: 2-5 Years: 2-3 drops once daily ; 6-10 Years: 2-5 drops once daily . The dosage may be adjusted under medical advice, according to the age and symptoms. Drink 6-8 glasses of water daily while using any laxative OR As directed by the physician .

Precautions

Prolonged use should be avoided. Prolong use may lead to diarrhoea, excessive loss & imbalance of electrolytes with possible hypokalemia.
