      How it works

      By mimicking the actions of endogenous ADH, desmopressin acts as a selective agonist of V2 receptors expressed in the renal collecting duct (CD) to increase water re-absorption and reduce urine production.

      • Unusually bad or prolonged headache, confusion, unexplained weight gain, ankle swelling, nausea or vomiting • itching, skin rashes, swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty in breathing, wheeziness, chest tightness or coughing (signs of allergic reaction) • headache • stomach pain

      Drug Interactions

      NSAIDs , tricyclic antidepressants, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, chlorpromazine and carbamazepine

      Indication

      It is indicated for the treatment of central diabetes insipidus ; it is also indicated for the treatment of primary nocturnal enuresis in children aged 5 years or more.

      When not to Use

      It is contraindicated in cases of: - Habitual or psychogenic polydipsia ; A history of known or suspected cardiac insufficiency and other conditions that requiring treatment with diuretics ; Moderate and severe renal insufficiency (creatinine clearance below 50 ml/min) ; Known hyponatraemia

      PRECAUTIONS

      Precaution

      Precautions must be taken in patients at risk of increased intracranial pressure .

      WARNINGS

      Warning 1

      Caution should be exercised in patients with other causes of urinary frequency (e.g. multiple sclerosis or urge incontinence), and in diabetes mellitus and renal impairment, since the use of desmopressin has not been well studied in these populations .

      Warning 2

      Treatment with desmopressin should be interrupted during acute intercurrent illnesses characterised by fluid and/or electrolyte imbalance (such as systemic infections, fever, gastroenteritis).

      Warning 3

      It should not be administered to dehydrated or overhydrated patients until water balance has been adequately restored.
